Republican Leader Dick Armey Calls
Congressman Barney Frank, "Barney Fag"
House Majority Leader Lies About It Until Tape Surfaces, Now Apologizes
Speaking in a radio address, Republican House of Representatives Majority Leader Dick Armey pointedly referred to fellow Congressman Barney Frank as "Barney fag." Mr. Frank, a Democrat, represents the fourth congressional district from Massachusetts.
Armey (right) at first tried to deny his statement until he learned that it had been taped. He then apologized.
Congressman Frank, who openly acknowledges that he is gay, is one of the most intelligent, literate men in Congress. During the right wing Republican attempt to impeach the President last year, Frank's comments were a breath of fresh air in an otherwise sorry spectacle of extreme partisanship.
In sharp contrast to Mr. Frank, Dick Armey's intelligence has been widely questioned. According to investigators, his high school adviser discouraged him from even applying to college. He went anyway, receiving poor grades. Through political connections he obtained a job teaching economics at a Texas university, where he was denied tenure. He left and ran for Congress; naturally the Republican party welcomed him with open arms, electing him their majority leader in the House of Representatives.
While teaching at North Texas State University, three different female students went on record complaining about inappropriate sexual advances from Armey. A fourth student didn't complain and ended up marrying him.
In keeping with the GOP's policy of hypocrisy instituted by Henry Hyde, Armey went to great lengths last year to attack the President of the United States for engaging in private, consensual adult sex.
Republican Senate Majority leader Trent Lott has a similar condescending attitude toward gays, arguing that they are like alcoholics and kleptomaniacs (see article at left).
In sharp contrast to the GOP's 'God Hates Fags' policy, the Democratic Party of the state of Maryland, lead by Governor Parris Glendening, has lead the fight for equal rights for all Americans, including gays and lesbians.
