Greenip Attacks Teaching Bar Graphs To Third Graders
Says they should be studying addition and subtraction instead
Crofton area House of Delegates member Janet Greenip continued her attack on education in the state of Maryland recently, saying that it is inappropriate for third graders to be taught about bar graphs.
"I am not crazy about third-graders learning bar graphs," she said, adding that the schools should instead teach "things children need to know to get along in this world." She said that third-graders should be taught "adding and subtracting."
Campaign sources said that Greenip can't figure out bar graphs herself, and it hasn't held her back.
Delegate Greenip introduced legislation in the last session to have phonics taught in elementary schools. Like most of her legislation, it went nowhere.
A county teacher who spoke with a Crofton Online reporter said that most teachers already use a combination of phonics and sight reading to teach elementary children. "Every elementary teacher knows that it is not an either / or thing. We already use every available tool, including phonics, to reach the kids. Each child is unique and teachers adapt their methods to meet individual needs," he said.
Janet Greenip is running for reelection in November.
