Our Readers Respond to the Controversy About
"I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings"

We are continuing our coverage of the controversy surrounding the book, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," by Maya Angelou. We attended the School Board hearing on Saturday, August 22 and Thursday, August 27 in Annapolis, at which several parents stated their objections to the book. Please click here to read our coverage and commentary.

Although we highly recommend that you read the entire book, available at any public library, we have placed a copy of the passages that some parents object to here, to assist you in making your own decision.

We will publish any and all comments that are submitted to us.

So far, we have received three public comments. The first is an excellent piece written by Mr. A. Brown. Mr. Brown also attended the public hearing. Please click here to read his essay.

The second was written by C. Chafin, an Arundel High School student, who read the book in her English class last year. Please click here to read her essay.

The third was submitted in response to the comments made by C. Chafin. Please click here to read this response.

Please check back often to read our updates.

Thank you.

As always, we are interested in what you think. Please let us know.
