Local Republican Ehrlich Flipflops on Opposition to Ethnic Cleansing, Blames U.S. President
Desperate Congressman attempts to subtly link NATO policy to Monica Lewinsky

Crofton area Republican Congressman Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. yesterday [May 20, 1999] switched sides in the NATO effort to stop the ethnic cleansing campaign of Yugoslavia's Slobodan Milosovic. Ehrlich, who had previously voted in support of the NATO campaign, in a major policy shift suddenly blasted NATO, saying, "This must stop!"

Ever the politician, Republican Ehrlich attempted to blame his about face on the President of the United States for failing to articulate a convincing reason for U.S. military involvement, according to the Baltimore Sun (BS).

Ehrlich is deputy to Republican Majority Whip Tom DeLay, who consistently refers to the NATO effort as "Clinton's War." One political observer recalled that Republican Robert Dole, who lost the last election to President Clinton, referred to World War Two as the "Democrat War."

Ehrlich was a staunch supporter of last year's "Get Clinton no matter what the cost" campaign engineered by the right wing extremists who control his party. Still smarting from their inability to make even one single charge against the President stick, Ehrlich and his fellow Maryland Republicans are floundering around, trying desperately to save their dying party.

Another Crofton area Republican, Wayne T. Gilchrest, was quoted in the BS as calling President Clinton a "psychotic, bizarre, brilliant teenager." Congressman Gilchrest has begun a public relations campaign to hide his rapid move to the extreme right wing fringe of his party by writing guest columns for a local advertising flier, emphasizing his stand on the environment.

In a related story, the Maryland GOP has invited registered independent voters to participate in their state primary. Fully aware of the polls showing that their candidates are all lame ducks unless they do something drastic, the party is counting on independents to do what they themselves don't have the political guts to do--purge the GOP of leaders who are so far to the right of the Maryland political mainstream that they are forcing their party to commit political suicide.
