Democrats Pick Up A Record Five Seats In Congress, Retain Control of Maryland State Government
They Also Grab Control In Anne Arundel But Lose One Delegate
Efforts of newly-organized, internet-empowered citizens paid off handsomely for the Democratic Party in yesterday's election. As expected by everyone except the tabloid media and its cadre of whining pundits, Democrats made substantial gains (five seats) in the U.S. House of Representatives. Remaining Republicans in that body must now decide how to deal with the Kenneth Starr albatross.
Groups such as Moveon.org rallied voters in the last two weeks of the election, resulting in an unusually high voter turnout. Locally, the Maryland delegation in both the House and Senate remained unchanged, with Democrats keeping their majority.
On the state level, Parris Glendening was easily reelected Governor in a race Republicans had hoped would be close. Democrats maintained their control of the state legislature, although locally, Republicans picked up a seat as voters replaced 'retiring' Marsha Perry with another Republican.
In Anne Arundel County, voters chose Democrat Janet Owens over incumbent Republican John Gary for County Executive, and gave majority control of the County Council to the Democrats. Changes are coming!
We remind readers of our article revealing a Secret Republican Strategy in the Ken Starr Fiasco , which we published in our July, 1998 issue. Take a look at it again and watch as the "bipartisan" chorus grows to gut the independent council law.
