Republicans Continue Attacks on Gays;
GOP Leadership Vows to Stop 'Every Single Presidential Nomination'
Gays called 'purveyors of smut'; No comment yet from Gilchrest, other Maryland Republicans

Right wing Republican Senator James Inhofe yesterday [June 8] threatened the President of the United States for appointing James C. Hormel as U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg. Senator Inhofe pledged to hold up "every single presidental appointment" from now on in retaliation for the appointment of Mr. Hormel, who is a former dean of the University of Chicago Law School. Mr. Hormel has been overwhelmingly approved for the post by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The Republican leadership refuses to let the Senate vote on the nomination.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott went a step further, calling the appointment of Mr. Hormel "a subversion of the confirmation process." Lott objects to the private sex life of Mr. Hormel, who has confirmed that he is gay. Lott, who also objects to the President's sex life, has publicly denounced homosexuality as similar to alcoholism or kleptomania.

Republican Andrea Sheldon, executive director of the Traditional Values Coalition, called the highly respected Hormel "a purveyor of smut" and of "cheering on child molesters and transvestite nuns."

Meanwhile, Crofton area Congressman Wayne T. Gilchrest apparently has no comment on the controversy. Republican Gilchrest, who has moved ever rightward during his terms in office, has steadfastly refused to criticize his party's extreme right wing leadership.
