Preachers Say the Darnedest Things
Holmes's Dad: 'Do the Right Thing'
Crofton Online Interviews Reverend Chris Holmes

The current (July, 1998) issue of Washingtonian magazine features an article about the retirement of Reverend Bill Holmes, Chris Holmes's father. The article says that the senior Holmes "made a career out of telling congregations what they don't want to hear."

The senior Holmes, according to the magazine article, frequently spoke out on social issues. As an example, commenting on the Ken Starr scandal, he is quoted as saying, "Adultery is not a rootless legalism or an uptight moralism," but he also criticized Clinton's accusers and the media: "We used to keep quiet about shame. Now we're ashamed to keep quiet."

Chris Holmes said the article about his father also described himself, though not exactly. He said that he speaks out strategically, and never in an in-your-face sort of way. Indeed, Reverend Chris Holmes has preached against casino gambling, and in favor of gun control laws, as well as for equal rights for gays and lesbians. He reminds us, though, that "to be a United Methodist, you don't have to agree with all the social principles" of the church, and you don't have to agree with the views of individual ministers.

The text of the Washingtonianarticle is not available online. The magazine can be purchased at the Giant checkout and other area retail outlets. Click here for a transcript of the Crofton Online interview.
