CNN yesterday [October 20, 2000] aired allegations that Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush was "involved" in an abortion and subsequent coverup in the 1970's. Candidate Bush, whose father was originally pro-choice but who abruptly changed his position in 1980 in order to join the ticket of former actor Ronald Reagan, had previously tried to paint his Republican opponent Senator John McCain as not anti-choice enough, in a pandering address before students at a Bible college earlier in the primary campaign.

The source for the CNN story was publisher Larry Flint, who in 1998 almost single handedly derailed the impeachment effort of Republicans Newt Gingrich and Tom Delay by publishing thoroughly documented details of the sex lives of President Clinton's Congressional tormentors. In every case, Flint's information has turned out to be accurate.
Publisher Flint has a statement from the doctor who performed the abortion on Bush's girlfriend. The woman has refused comment.

Previously published reports have also detailed Bush's drug arrest in Texas during the heyday of his drinking, partying days. Quick action by a lawyer friend of Bush senior got the charges dropped and the record expunged. Bush Jr. has repeatedly refused to answer the question, "Have you used cocaine?" arguing that the private life of a public servant is no one else's business. It's a shame he didn't speak up during the 1998 Starr Inquisition investigation into the private sex life of the President.
