More Guns Needed in Schools, Says Baltimore Sun Columnist Kane
Others see need to ban trench coats, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Baltimore Sun (BS) columnist Gregory Kane today [April 24, 1999] said that we need to INCREASE the number of guns in our schools, arguing that "the carnage might have been stopped before it even started" at Columbine High School in Colorado if everyone was packing a rod. He went on to condemn as "anti-self defense" those who dared to disagree with his 'arm the students' campaign.

Kane is a right wing columnist for the tabloid BS who seems to pride himself on making asinine statements. By hiring one of the two black right wingers in this country, the BS hopes to present a false image of impartiality in its 'reporting.'

In other, equally ridiculous responses to the shocking Colorado massacre, the BS reported the recall of a 1995 video starring teen heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio because he wore a trench coat in the film. They also reported that Warner Brothers was withdrawing "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" because of the murders! And the parents of one of the dead students said that the murderers went on their rampage because of a 1963 Supreme Court decision prohibiting schools from forcing student participation in government-sponsored prayers in schools. We are NOT making any of this up.

The mainstream media was, of course, beside itself with glee about the disaster, interrupting regular 'programming' to show closeups of crying parents, and pushing the totally false idea that it was all a result of gang violence. We could almost see school officials across the country nodding their heads in agreement, and planning on even stricter enforcement of their dress codes banning hats in school.

Predictably, the pundits immediately tried to link what happened to the Internet, claiming that the 'bombs' - none of which ever actually exploded - were based on designs obtained online. If only the murderers had watched TV instead, maybe none of this would have happened.

The hysterical, self-serving reaction of the mainsteam media should, as always, be dismissed out of hand. But what do intelligent people think about all the killings? Is there anything we can do to decrease the likelihood of further mass murders?
