I doubt that very many of your readers will disagree with your description of the editor from The Baltimore Sun making asinine statements about arming our students with more guns. In fact, he oughta be shot just on grounds of gross stupidity. He had to have either been joking, or a complete idiot, the fact that he apparently REMAINS an "editor," seems to speak volumes about the publication on a whole. It seems that whenever a tragedy of this particular magnitude happens to occur, everyone seemingly scrambles to find out "who is to BLAME." Which I assume has something to do with basic human instincts and reactions as we attempt to somehow make some kind of sense out of a situation that no one can figure out. I think there is not one particular "right" answer to the dilemma involving our children's safety in the schools. To ban the wearing of trenchcoats is not going to stop the problem. Pulling specific violent movies or books from their shelves, I believe, will also have little or no effect either. So what IS the answer? Again, I do not feel there IS any one simple answer. On the other hand, I feel that in many respects, we, as a nation, have in many ways failed our children. Hillary's now infamous line about it taking a village to raise a child, carries much truth. If every single person out there took a few minutes out of their busy schedules to in ANY small way help, encourage or just simply "LISTEN" to a child that is having problems, I feel we could begin to gradually turn things around. Everyone is so busy, life keeps flying by, nobody wants to be bothered, or take the time. There seems to be a growing consensus when this kind of thing happens, to turn away, to just be happy that it wasn't YOUR child shot, or that it wasn't YOUR child doing the shooting. What people fail to recognize is that we are all in this together, like it or not. And maybe next time, and I am sure there WILL be a next time, it COULD be your son or daughter. TALK to your kids, LISTEN to your kids, INTERVENE when you see a potential problem. Don't wait. We have all seen the destruction that occurs when we "wait." |
