Baltimore Sun Blasts Mfume For Not Following Orders; Says He Is Finished In Politics
Front page editorial says he has "much to repair" if he is to continue his civil rights leadership

The tabloid Baltimore Sun (BS) blasted NAACP President Kweisi Mfume today [May 26, 1999] in a front page editorial written by BS staffer Erin Texeira. The BS, still upset with the U.S. Senate for refusing its demand for the impeachment of President Clinton, was apparently even more furious at President Mfume for not following its order that he run for mayor of Baltimore.

The BS announced months ago that President Mfume must be the next mayor of Baltimore, despite the fact that he doesn't even live there. It then directed the state legislature to change the residency requirement, which it promptly did. Finally, it announced a "Draft Mfume" movement which was immediately endorsed by Maryland's political elite.

Although flattered, Mfume decided not to run.

With its credibility at an all time low, the BS lashed out at Mfume, saying that the political elite had been "jilted" and that he had "wounded his political credibility for future races." At no time did the arrogant BS consult with the citizens of Baltimore about theirwishes.

The racist BS apparently felt that no citizen of the city was capable of being mayor, and that its residents could not choose their own leaders; therefore it had no choice but to step in and dictate. Naturally it assumed that Mr. Mfume would snap to attention and follow orders, as had the rest of the political "leadership" in Annapolis. But Mr. Mfume not only refused to make his decision in the time frame they had dictated, he had the gall to decide to not even run!

Despite the BS, Mr. Mfume remains as President of the NAACP, he is still well-respected by those who truly count, and he has a great future ahead of him, even in politics if he so desires. He will continue to accomplish anything he sets out to accomplish.

The BS should be ashamed, if it weren't already past shame.

We welcome your response.
