We are writing to express dissatisfaction with the street and traffic
engineering in Crofton, particularly along Good Hope Dr., its intersection
with MD Route 450, and along Route 450 itself near this intersection. This
dissatisfaction is based on the following observations:
|
- Crosswalks at the intersection of Urby Dr. and Good Hope Dr. are missing from the east and south sides of the intersection, suggesting that southbound pedestrian traffic be routed to the west side of Good Hope, south of Urby. - The new traffic island at Urby and Good Hope provides no crossing for pedestrians across the south side of the intersection. - A sidewalk exists only on the west side of Good Hope Dr. between Urby Dr. and Route 450, consistent with the above. - At Good Hope and Route 450, a crosswalk exists only on the east and south sides of the intersection, inconsistent with pedestrian traffic along the west side of Good Hope. Pedestrian traffic headed south on Good Hope is brought to a dead end at Route 450, with no crosswalk in either direction. - Sidewalks are not present on either the north or south sides of Route 450, between Good Hope Dr. and the shopping areas west of the intersection. The design of these two intersections is incomplete, and lacks self-consistency. There is no good route for pedestrian traffic from within the triangle to and from the shopping areas on the opposite side of Route 450. The amount of pedestrian traffic here is significant. It is only a matter of time before ambiguities faced by drivers and pedestrians will lead to accidents and fatalities at these intersections. We believe that the proper design of streets and intersections to support and protect pedestrian traffic is important to the quality of life and value of real estate in the Crofton community. Proper design is required of developers within the Crofton community, and the municipal improvements should be held to the same standard. We suggest that minor improvements to correct the deficiencies we've identified, at this and other intersections around the perimeter of the Crofton triangle, would pay large dividends to the community in increased safety and convenience.
