Crofton Online: Move On
Internet Advocacy Group, MoveOn.org, Breaks Records in Online Fundraising for Year 2000 Congressional Races
Citizens, candidates, political 'consultants' all watching closely.

[June 30, 1999] The MoveOn.org "We will remember" campaign began its drive to the year 2000 elections by raising more than $250,000 online in just three business days. Rushing to raise significant dollars for five candidates before the June 30th FEC filing deadline, MoveOn.org sent word by email to its 25,000 "We will remember" pledgers on Friday, June 25th.

This first "We will remember" solicitation marks a number of campaign fund-raising firsts and breaks a number of records. This is the first time a contributor has been able to support a full slate of candidates at a single site on the Internet. Raising $250,000 in five days, the effort breaks all records in online campaign fund raising dollars raised and speed of response.

Ninety-two percent of "We will remember" contributions to candidates were under $50.00. Unlike direct mail fund-raising, Internet fund-raising requires little overhead. "Because costs are so low, we can support low dollar amount contributions from the broadest group of ordinary citizens and actually give the contributions to the candidates and not the post office," said Wes Boyd, co-founder of MoveOn.org. "It opens a whole new source of support for candidates from ordinary people."

"MoveOn.org has shown the power of the Internet for grassroots lobbying and is now showing its viability as an alternative to $1000 a plate fund raisers," said MoveOn.org co-founder Joan Blades. "The Internet can help thousands of ordinary citizens give their $25 to support candidates, and diffuse the power of narrow and extreme special interests."

Moving from advocacy to electoral action, the MoveOn.org "We will remember" campaign is raising funds for candidates challenging incumbents who supported impeachment.

Five candidates from across the nation were highlighted in this first offering:

Adam Schiffrunning against impeachment House manager Rogan in California,

Governor Mel Carnahanrunning against Senator Ashcroft in Missouri,

Representative Rush Holtdefending his recently won seat in New Jersey,

Nancy Keenanrunning against Representative Hill in Montana, and

Jean Elliott Brownrunning against Representative Foley in Florida.

As races become more clear and the election season heats up, MoveOn will offer more candidates for consideration by contributors.

Both candidates and contributors are excited by the new approach to supporting campaigns. "MoveOn is breaking new ground in grassroots politics." said congressional candidate and California State Senator Adam Schiff. "With the assistance of cutting-edge technology, MoveOn is involving thousands and thousands of average citizens in the political process - in effect restoring and reinventing grassroots politics."

MoveOn contributor Herb DeVaan adds, "The politicians will have to answer to citizens rather than the special interests, and everyone will benefit."

MoveOn.org is an Internet-driven advocacy group which supports the effective political participation of average citizens. The website, begun by Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, Wes Boyd and Joan Blades, has inspired 500,000 on-line Americans to lobby Congress and more recently won pledges of $13.4 million and 750,000 volunteer hours for the election of candidates in the year 2000 election.
