Maryland Democrats Pledge Ten Thousand Volunteers for Elections in the Year 2000
Politcal organizers meet in Howard County as GOP/NRA kills key gun control legislation.

Under the direction of Peter Krauser, political activists from across the state of Maryland met today [June 19, 1999] to organize for the elections to be held in November, 2000. A group of Democratic Party faithful gathered at Howard County Community College to discuss political organization strategies in what has become known nationally as the "Maryland Model."

The group pledged itself to recruit 10,000 volunteers committed to building on the state Party's phenomenal election successes in 1998.

While the Democrats met in Maryland, the nation awoke to news that the GOP/NRA had once again defeated rational gun control legislation supported by the overwhelming majority of voters in both parties.

Sources close to the Republican congressional leadership report that the GOP is convinced the substantial campaign "contributions" it will reap from the gun manufacturers will last longer than the memory of the average voter.

One attendee at the Democrats' Organize 2000 meeting in Columbia told Crofton Online that, despite what the GOP apparently believes, "We will still remember next November."

With a smirk on his face, Republican House Majority Whip Tom DeLay said of the defeat of the gun control legislation, "It was a great personal victory for me." Mr. DeLay and the rest of his party will enter the next election season with the blood of countless school children on their hands.
