We have known all along that Maryland's gutless Governor Parris Glendening keeps his finger in the air, ready to switch positions as the political winds change. Certainly not one of his nicer personal traits, but since the political winds in Maryland are usually blowing in the right direction, this hasn't really been a problem. Until now. Gutless Glendening has totally misread the public. Instead of recognizing the overwhelming disgust the public feels toward the unholy alliance between tobacco lobbyist Ken Starr and the inside-the-beltway media pundits, he has adopted a "holier-than-thou" approach, deciding that he won't lower himself to being seen with the President of the United States. We predict that this gross miscalculation will cost him the election, regardless of the final outcome in this sordid tale known as Pressgate. The vast majority of Maryland citizens have done things at some point in their lives that would cause embarrassment if investigated by an amoral partisan political operative with unlimited resources at his disposal. And some of us may have even done things in our personal lives that we might be inclined to lie about if confronted with them publicly. We recognize this, and count on basic human decency to protect us as we strive to live better lives. The issue, Governor, is how do we protect our nation from a horde of media moguls intent on demonstrating their power over us, and from a "prosecutor" more than willing to sell our national institutions down the river, without endangering our basic freedom of the press? You should take a lesson from Congressman Steny Hoyer. |
