Thousands Gather at U.S. Capital to Demand That Congress 'Move On'
All Sections of Country Represented at Anti-Impeachment Rally
With only 48 hours advance notice, thousands of citizens from across the country converged on the U.S. Capital today [December 17, 1998] to demand that Republicans in Congress drop impeachment and move on to pressing national business.
A cross section of Americans from as far away as California, New York, and Ohio, and locally from Washington DC, Baltimore, and Crofton, Maryland, held hands in the early morning cold to pray for our nation and its leaders. Speakers at the rally included the Reverend Jesse Jackson of the Rainbow Coalition and Representative John Conyers, the ranking minority member of the House Judiciary Committee, as well as representatives from the AFL-CIO, the National Organization for Women, and other concerned organizations.
People at the rally represented a wide range of political opinions. There were Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservatives, young people and old, of all races, religions, and creeds, brought together to insist that the Congress of the United States must not ignore its citizens. By overwhelming, landslide proportions, the American people are saying loudly and clearly, in every way they know how, that this impeachment is wrong and must be stopped.

In a democracy, politicians who ignore their constituents do not remain in office. We will note the roll call vote about to be taken, and we will remember!
