Crofton Online: A National Disgrace
Republican Hypocrisy Brings Shame on the United States
Gilchrest Flip Flop, Dishonesty, Embarrasses Crofton
Radical rightwing Republicans continued their attack on the United States today [December 18, 1998], criticizing the U.S. military attack on Iraq's Sadam Hussein, and pushing forward with their attempt to overthrow the nation's duly elected government.
Crofton area Congressman Wayne T. Gilchrest, who just prior to the last election had indicated to his constituents that he opposed his party's coup attempt, gave in to pressure from Christian fundamentalists to put party above principle, announcing his intention to support impeachment against the clear wishes of his constituents.
These are trying times in which many people of good will are losing faith in the nation's democratic institutions. Clearly if Mr. Gilchrest's dishonesty is allowed to stand, if the Christian fundamentalists who now control the once great Republican party are allowed to succeed, then shame not only on the United States, but shame on each and every one of us for not standing up now and shouting as loudly as we can, "Enough is enough!"
In a democracy, politicians who ignore their constituents do not remain in office. We will note the roll call vote about to be taken, and we will remember!
