A Crofton Online Exclusive Interview
'County Schools Are Underfunded,' Says Council Candidate Shearer
'We have wonderful teachers, principals, and administrators.'

Tim Shearer, candidate for Anne Arundel County Council, believes that county teachers, principals, and administrators are doing "a wonderful job" but he believes that our schools are not being adequately funded. Part of the problem is the confrontational attitude of John Gary and his supporters on the council.

Tim Shearer campaign material tells why he
should be elected to the County Council.
"Anne Arundel County is low on the list" of counties when it comes to getting state funds, he says. A spirit of cooperation with state and local government and education officials would help our county find the funding necessary for school construction and maintenance.

Regarding the county schools, Shearer says we have "a lack of adequate equipment, lack of adequate maintenance, and a lack of adequate planning." He cites schools that still have 1950s style bathrooms, schools that are overcrowded, and schools that have inadequate computer equipment.

"Each child is generally limited to half an hour per week on computer equipment. They can't learn how to effectively use" computers in that amount of time, he said.

Shearer supports the idea of having an elected school board, with one caveat. The school board should be chosen in "a special, separate election" to keep politics out of it, he says.

"We need to bring back respect for our students and teachers," Shearer said, adding that the current county executive and council have shown their lack of respect for teachers, parents, and students.

When asked by Crofton Online to tell us why voters should replace John Klocko with him, he pointed out that "Maryland is 350 years old. We need county leaders who think ahead, who will be planning for our county for the next 350 years" rather than just through the next election.

He promised to restore respect to our teachers, students, and administrators and pledged to be "environmentally friendly." We should "stop helping the developers," he added.
