Thousands of Maryland citizens descended by the busload on The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro Saturday [October 30, 1999] to meet directly with the state's top elected officials.
Meeting with the citizens were county executives from across the state, including Janet Owens from Anne Arundel County; Congressmen Steny Hoyer, Ben Cardin, and Elijah Cummings; Senators Paul Sarbanes and Barbara Mikulski; and Governor Parris Glendening. The group is helping set the state's political agenda for the coming millennium.

This amazing demonstration of democracy in action is officially being called the First Annual Summit of the Maryland Democratic Party. Nationally it is known as Krauser's Maryland Model, named after state party chairman Peter Krauser. Last year the Maryland RepublicanParty committed suicide, following orders from national GOP leaders to support the agenda of the radical right no matter the consequences. This left the Democratic Party as the sole legitimate political force in the state. The GOP took a severe beating in the last election, as voters once again rejected the hate-filled Republican messages of Pat Buchanan, Dick Armey, and Kenneth Starr. The long shot survival bids of two area Republicans, Wayne Gilchrest and Robert Ehrlich, depend on their ability to hide their devotion to their party's radical right leadership. They believe that voters have a short memory. Meanwhile, astute observers are focusing on which Democrats will be chosen to replace these two lame ducks. More on that later. |
