Crofton Online: Safety of Parkway Walkers
A Reader Says: 'Precautions Can Save Lives'
I am one of the many "Parkway" walkers who takes advantage of the 3-mile
course that is so conveniently close to home. I use the sidewalk, not
the road, and I only walk in the daylight hours. I understand that some
people would rather walk or run on the actual road surface before dawn
and after dusk. I only ask that they wear white- or light-colored
clothing. I leave for work at 6:30 AM every morning and continually see
walkers and joggers in the roadway who are dressed as dark as the
night. At least a few of the early or late walkers/joggers use the
reflective strips on their clothing or shoes, but those who don't are
taking a huge risk in being struck by a car or school bus. If these
walkers/joggers are taking the extra precaution of walking/running on
the road during dark hours, how about taking one more precaution and
wearing white- or light-colored clothing? It could save their lives.
